Hint & Tip of the Fortnight Under control

Using the mouse to control Windows Media Player is a bit clumsy. However, there are a number of keyboard shortcuts which control all the common elements of the program. If you want to pause a song or video, press Ctrl+P - you can press the same combination again to resume play. If you need to stop the song, pressing Ctrl+S stops play in a hurry. Pressing Ctrl+E will eject the CD or DVD currently in the designated drive.

  • In a spin - You may be fond of your vinyl and tape collections but they don't offer the quality or convenience of today's audio standards. We guide you through creating digital copies of old albums, and update you on the latest software that makes the process easier.

  • Safer shopping - You can't beat the internet for bargain hunting, but many people are still not comfortable entering their bank details online. So you'll be pleased to hear that there are several secure payment services now available. We find out just how good they are.
  • A family affair - Tracing your family tree can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, one that can be made easier and more interactive with the aid of genealogy software. We try six products that will help bring your ancestors to life.
  • Access granted? - The Disability Discrimination Act says that everyone should be able to take advantage of online bargains. We test six online retailers to see if the IT industry is leading by example.
